A small proof of concept prototype made in Unity.

I am not exactly sure whether I'll expand upon this again in the future or not, but I might reuse some features or mechanics in other projects. In any case, this was a very fun experiment, although it isn't perfect.

Detailed mechanics:

  • The player can throw a swing rope with the left click, the rope remains attached as long as the left click is pressed, the player can swing around the object with WASD, with S stretching the rope, and Space pulling the player towards the object.  (This behavior only happens with green objects.)
  • Yellow cubes are supposed to be props in the scene, like boxes or barrels, with the rope attached to one of them, the player can press Z to pull it towards them. Each cube could have a different pulling force to signify their different weights, some objects could be harder to pull than others.
  • Red capsules represent enemies, with the ropes attached to one of them, the player can press Z to dash to/through them depending on how far they are. If the player is close enough, the enemies will play a particle effect and die.
  • Additionally, the player can use a grapple hook with the X button, that automatically pulls them to the target. This has a higher range and is smoother, but lacks the freedom of the swing rope.
  • The player can die if their falling velocity crosses a certain threshold, but that can be avoided by using either the swing rope or the grapple hook at the right time.
  • The ropes have fluid,  realistic physics-like animation that makes them satisfying to use.
  • There is a bit of prediction with the rope swinging, as sphere casting is used instead of ray casting to make it easier for the player to shoot at objects at higher speeds.
